What Is Real-Time Ultrasound?
Real-time ultrasound is a device that allows your therapist to view the deep core stability muscles as they contract. This provides an accurate assessment of the quality, timing and endurance of the stabilising muscle contraction.
Real-time Ultrasound can also play a vital role in the retraining of these specific muscles. Patients are provided with feedback on correctly activating these deeper muscles. The real-time ultrasound can be applied while the patient is in different positions. For example, sitting for office workers and standing for check-out operators.
Our physiotherapists are able to assess the activation of the deeper muscle system of the hip joint and in the shoulder. Real-time ultrasound can also assess the dynamic stability of the rotator cuff muscle group.
Who Will Benefit from Real-Time Ultrasound?
Anyone who has a history of lower back or pelvic pain will benefit from real-time ultrasound core training. At Everton Park Physiotherapy we use real-time ultrasound as part of our treatment regime for patients who have an acute episode of lower back pain or a chronic condition. It is also an important part of preparing you for the Clinical Pilates classes and we can measure your core activation to track your progress.
Role of Core Stability Muscles
The word core refers to the deep stabilising muscles of the trunk and pelvis. When these muscles activate in the correct manner they act like a corset, helping to stabilise and protect your Lower Back and Pelvis.
Research has shown that dysfunction in the core stability muscles occurs in people with lower back pain and increases the likelihood of recurring lower back pain.
