Is pain a big problem in Australia?
It certainly is and you are not alone – read on to find out more…
Pain is the most common reason that people seek medical help, yet it remains one of the most neglected and misunderstood areas of health care. One in five Australians live with chronic pain, including adolescents and children. If we consider Australians over the age of 65, a massive 1 in 3 are affected. The economic cost of pain to the Australian economy is estimated at over $34 Billion! It is Australia’s third most costly health condition, after cardiovascular diseases and musculoskeletal conditions (also associated with chronic pain).
Arthritis and back problems, both associated with chronic pain, are the most common reasons people of working age (45-64) drop out of the workforce, accounting for 40% of forced retirements. Early intervention and evidence based treatment could potentially halve the cost of chronic pain to the Australian economy. For an example of evidence based pain treatments we utilise at Everton Park Physiotherapy, please see our Protectometer Blog (coming soon).
Patients face long waiting times to access multidisciplinary pain services in public hospitals – frequently more than a year – resulting in deterioration in quality of life and reduction in the ability to return to work. As Chronic pain is invisible, patients often feel misunderstood by co-workers, friends, family and even the medical profession.
1 in 5 Australian adults with severe pain also suffer depression or other mood disorders, where 1 in 3 Australian adults with severe pain have high levels of psychological distress.
